Our Story

What began as a passion project has evolved into something more.

We’re proud of where we’ve been and even more excited for what’s ahead.

How Astoria Harvest Works

Astoria Harvest Community Network is a mutual aid project of Clatsop County Humanist Community, a 501(c)(3). The idea is simple: there is already enough stuff in this county. It just isn't always in the right hands. We move it from where it's sitting to where it's needed.

We also run food swaps and pantry stock up events, coat drives and clothing swaps, and garden matching for food production. All of these items are free to the public and no barrier to attend.

Where it comes from

Most of what we move comes from our neighbors. People downsizing, families settling an estate, folks clearing out a garage or a whole house. We offer free household clear outs: we come out, sort what's there, and take it off your hands. Other donations come from community drives, local businesses, seed companies that support our growing work, and our own farm at Liten Hobbit Stuga, where nearly every egg the flock lays is given away.

What we do with it

We don't run a warehouse. Nothing sits in storage waiting for someone to need it or gets siloed in a basement. Instead, we match items to people before they move. Donations are sorted and processed ahead of pickup, then delivered directly to:

  • Partner agencies and programs across Clatsop County, which receive collections for the people they already serve

  • Individuals and households, peer to peer, when a caseworker, agency, neighbor, or the person themselves reaches out with a need

  • Community groups and thrift alliances, including the Free For All Market, the new Art Co-op, and the Tool Lending Library

Whatever doesn't find a specific home goes to the Free For All Market, where anyone can take what they need, no questions asked.

Why we do it this way

Because it works, and because it's kind. Direct delivery means less overhead, faster help, and fewer things ending up in the landfill. Partnering with agencies means items reach people through someone they already trust. Giving freely, without hoops, means nobody has to prove they deserve help. Every exchange makes the network a little stronger: neighbors meet neighbors, and connections form that outlast any single donation. We help build resilience, relationships, and resource systems that work.

In our first year we helped more than 750 households and individuals, worked alongside about a dozen agencies and professionals, delivered 36+ truckloads, cleared nearly a dozen homes for free, and kept several tons of usable items out of the waste stream.

How to help

All our labor is volunteer; what costs money is gas and keeping the truck running, so cash donations go straight to getting things where they need to go, and fulfilling small needs to bridge the gap and keep people from falling further behind.
